Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects in India & Updates on Solar Tariffs in the State of Rajasthan | Punjab & Maharashtra !

India currently is exploring every possible ways to scale the deployment of more and more solar power projects in the country. Very recently the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) released a draft document outlining allocation process for another upcoming 1,500MW of solar PV capacity under phase two of India’s National Solar Mission (NSM) Batch II scheme (For more details : Click Here). Some other important steps taken in this direction is the planning of Ultra Mega Solar Power Project (UMSPP) across India.

One such huge solar project is also being envisaged and planned in the state of Rajasthan for which the MoU have been signed between Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), Sambhar Salts Limited (SSL), Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), Sutlej JalVidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) and Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Limited (REIL) for formation of a Joint Venture Company (JVC) for setting up of a Ultra Mega Solar Power Project (UMSPP) with a cumulative capacity of 4,000 MW in phases at Sambhar in Rajasthan on build, own and operate basis.

The cumulative size planned is 4000 MW which would be executed in a phased manner with deployment of 1000 MW in the First Phase and balance 3000 MW in other phases, in all the entire project is likely to be commissioned by about 8 years from the date of all approvals & permissions.

The entire project would be under the supervision of Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Industries (HI&PE) & is an initiative of Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Industries (HI&PE), Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Ministry of Power (MoP).

The proposed equity participation & proposed scope of work for the project is :

The other large scale solar project that could see taking shape might be the planning and implementation of the Ultra Mega Solar Power Plant Projects in the state of J&K. Very recently a MoU was signed between the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE)  of India and Science and Technology Department of government of J&K for setting up of 5000 MW & 2500MW Solar PV Power Project in the regions of Leh & Kargil for which the co-ordination committee for implementation of the project has also been constituted by MNRE.

Some other Solar Tariff Updates from States :

  • Rajasthan :
    • Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) has released draft order for determination of Tariffs for Solar PV and Solar Thermal Projects. The RERC draft order can be accessed Here.
  • Maharashtra :
    • MERC (Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission) through an order on 6thMay 2014, has allowed Open Access for the Solar Power in Maharashtra. The detailed MERC order can be accessed Here.
    • Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), through an order on 7th July 2014, releases order regarding the Renewable Energy tariff for FY 2014-15. The official MERC tariff order is available Here.
  • Punjab :
    • The Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) released a draft for determination of tariff for Renewable Energy sources on 11th July 2014. The document can be accessed Here.
