Total Solar Power installed in India reached about 2208 MW till Jan 2014. The Government has been instrumental in promotion & deployment of solar energy systems as India is endowed with large solar energy potential whereby about 5000 trillion kWh per year energy is incident over India’s land area with most parts receiving 4-7 kWh per sq. m. per day with almost with more than 300 sunny days.

The Cabinet has approved application segment wise targets for the three phases of National Solar Mission (JNNSM). The targets under Phase-I, Phase-II and Phase-III and the achievements till date are as under:

Application Segment
Target for PhaseI
(2010-13)
Cumulative Target of Phase-II (2013-17)
Cumulative Target of Phase-III (2017-22)
Achievement till date
Grid solar power
(large plants, roof top & distribution grid plants)
1,100 MW
10000 MW
20000 MW
2208 MW (including those under state initiative)
Off-grid solar applications allotment
200 MW
1000 MW
2000 MW
275.2 MW

Let’s have a look into approx. State wise Solar power plants installed in India :

The deployment of these solar power plants in India were results of various schemes & solar policies in India viz. under Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) scheme, State schemes, Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO), through central PSU’s, with contribution through various private initiatives etc.

Still Gujarat contributes the most among all the states in terms of solar power deployment and that too under its much acclaimed Gujarat Solar Policy Phase I & Phase II while everyone still anticipating the announcement of Gujarat Solar Policy Phase III since past two years. Although Madhya Pradesh & Rajasthan are not far in the race.

Renewable Updates from Gujarat :

Very recently Gujarat Electricity and Regulatory Commission (GERC) has announced a total Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) target of 10% for FY2016-17.

Gujarat Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) till 2016 - 2017

Gujarat Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) till 2016 – 2017

The new RPO targets introduced first amendment to the existing regulations which shall now be called as the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (Procurement of Energy from Renewable Sources) (First Amendment) Regulations, 2014 with two new regulations also added as :

  • The Commission will determine the Average Power Purchase Cost (APPC) of the distribution licensee concerned on annual basis. The distribution licensee will be liable to pay APPC at the time of purchase of electrical component from renewable energy projects registered under the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) scheme.
  • The distribution licensee will also purchase surplus power at APPC from renewable energy generator set up under the REC scheme supplying power for captive use or sale to third party.

These regulations with respect to APPC will come into effect from 1 April 2014.

Meanwhile till we meet next time…….wishing all the readers a very HAPPY HOLI ! 🙂

Cheers,
